In 1989, Dr. Vanessa Ragland and her two sons, Chris and Cubby, became part of the Haleyville community. As our first Black female physician and one of the founding members of Family Medical Associates, Dr. Ragland blazed a trail not just in medicine, but in compassion, leadership, and service.

For more than three decades, “Doc,” as she is affectionately known, has been a cornerstone of care in our community—offering wisdom, grace, and steadfast commitment to every patient she meets. Her impact goes far beyond the exam room. She has mentored young professionals, comforted families in crisis, and served as a trusted voice for health and healing.

This Black History Month, we celebrate her legacy with deep gratitude. Thank you, Doc, for your passion for others, your quiet strength, and your dedication to making Haleyville a healthier, stronger place to live.
